TOMAHAWK 777
• 2 versions exist, version 1 and version 5. There's also 2 different flyers, one for each version. There are several differences between them. In both versions, the point values for shooting aliens is the same (pictures #1 and #2).
Version 1:
There's an underwater current from right-to-left.
Mines appear in the water from the left side of the screen. The game
starts with 1 mine and more are added the longer you play. Patterns 3, 4,
and 5 have 2 mines. Patterns 6, 7, and 8 have 3 mines.
3 objects slowly move across the bottom from left to right. You can't run
into them and the aliens can't bomb or destroy them, so it looks like they're
only there for show.
Every pattern has 24 aliens. All the aliens have the same graphics, but
each row of them has different colors. Aliens slowly appear from the top
and move down. When they get close to the water, they dive down towards
the sub but are limited as to how far they can move left or right, so it's
easier to avoid them. With each pattern, the formations starts lower on
the screen and moves faster. The "suicide" (diving) aliens move faster as
well, and can move left or right further. Patterns 4 and 5 have 2 aliens at most
dropping at the same time. Patterns 6, 7, and 8 have 3 aliens at most
dropping at the same time. Like Space Invaders, the more aliens that are
shot, the faster the remaining aliens will move.
There's a total of 8 different patterns. At pattern 9, the difficulty will
reset back to that of pattern 1.
Version 5:
There's no underwater current, and no mines.
There's borders on both sides of the screen. There's no objects moving
along the bottom of the screen.
There's 24 aliens and they all appear at the start of every pattern. The
aliens have different graphics as well as different colors. There's an
anchor icon on the bottom of the screen for every pattern you reach, up to 10,
after which you'll see the number "10" in the lower-left corner as the icons get
added back. Now, when the aliens dive at you, they move from one side of
the screen to the other as they drop. The faster they move and the closer
to pattern 10 you get, the more likely they are to reverse direction when moving
away from you.
Every time an alien falls
past you and reappears at the top of the screen, the water level will drop. If
enough aliens get past you, the water level will push you down to the bottom.
Clearing a formation resets the level back to the top.
The manual mentions if you destroy a green "suicide" UFO underwater, you'll earn
a bonus of 800 points, but the bonus UFO can be any alien of any color, and it's
possibly random with every pattern as to which one it is (and there can be more
than 1 per pattern). The attraction mode usually shows the very first
alien that's shot being a bonus 800 point one, which is a yellow alien from the
bottom row. Also, you can only get the 800 points if the alien is in
'suicide' mode and not in its standard formation mode, plus it doesn't have to
be underwater to get the 800 points.
•
You can earn only 1 extra life during the game (at either 3,000, 5,000, or
7,000). Rolling the score counter over doesn't give you a chance to earn
another one.
• The score counter rolls over at 100,000.
• BUG: (version 1) The manual mentions if you destroy a green "suicide" UFO underwater, you'll earn a bonus of 800 points, but the bonus UFO can be any alien of any color, and it's possibly random with every pattern as to which one it is (and there can be more than 1 per pattern). The attraction mode usually shows the very first alien that's shot being a bonus 800 point one, which is a yellow alien from the bottom row. Also, you can only get the 800 points if the alien is in suicide (attack) mode and not in its standard formation mode, plus it doesn't have to be underwater to get the 800 points.
• BUG: (version 5) The flyer for this version (AKA "New Type") mentions you earn a free sub if you get the high score "for longer playing time", which would have been a unique feature had it been implemented! Alas, you don't get an extra sub for getting a new high score.
• BUG:
(version 5) If your ship explodes at the very bottom of the screen, it
briefly knocks out a section of the border (picture #3).
